The University of Papua (UPNG) successfully hosted its annual Career Expo on August 15th and 16th, 2024, at the Drill Hall. Organized by the Student Services Department Career Office, the event attracted 23 companies from various industries looking to engage with the next generation of professionals.

The expo, spread over two days, catered to different year levels. On the first day, fourth-year students were given the opportunity to network with employers, while the second day opened the doors for third, second, and first-year students. This structure allowed final-year students to focus on potential job opportunities, while younger students gained early exposure to career options and workplace expectations.

In his opening remarks, the UPNG Registrar Mr Roboam Kakap emphasized the importance of maintaining an open mind when searching for employment. He urged students to adopt a learning attitude, reminding them that their interactions at the expo were valuable opportunities to understand industry expectations. “You must come with an open mind and a readiness to learn,” Mr Kakap advised. “It’s not just about securing a job but understanding how you can grow and fit into different industries.”

The participating companies represented a wide range of sectors, including banking, energy, telecommunications, and government services. Many of these organizations offered internships, graduate programs, and other career pathways for students, fostering a spirit of collaboration between the university and the corporate sector.

Students praised the event, saying it gave them insight into the skills and qualities employers are looking for, as well as a chance to ask questions about specific career paths. Ms Dika Iru, the Director for the Student Services Department and Career Office coordinator, shared her views on the event. She said that initially in 2019 it started with 6 companies and now it was up to 23 companies. “Students have the opportunity like this at their fingertips, and it’s good to take advantage of that opportunity,” said Ms Iru.

The 2024 UPNG Career Expo continues to serve as an essential bridge between students and employers, providing a platform for students to explore opportunities and build connections that will help them navigate their future careers.
