In 2019, the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) set up its Career Office as part of the Student Welfare and Development branch within the Student Services Department. The main goal of this office is to link students with job opportunities while providing important resources and support to both students and local businesses.

Situated in the Student Services Department, the Career Office acts as a helpful center for students looking for advice on career choices, internships, and job placements. The office focuses on improving students’ chances of getting hired by offering workshops, help with resume writing, and interview preparation.

Ms. Dika Iru, the Acting Director of Student Services, also oversees the Career Office. She highlights the need for students to gain the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in the job market. “Our aim is to help students make a smooth transition from school to work. We provide resources and connections to support them in finding jobs,” Ms. Iru said.

The Career Office not only assists students but also works with local businesses to find and promote job opportunities. By connecting students with potential employers, it plays an important role in supporting economic growth and building a skilled workforce in Papua New Guinea.

Through collaborations with different industries, the Career Office provides insights into job market trends, helping students understand which skills are currently in demand. The office also organizes career fairs and networking events, giving students a chance to meet employers and explore various career paths.

Since it has opened, the Career Office at UPNG has achieved significant progress in preparing students for their future careers. Its innovative approach to link education with job opportunities demonstrates the university’s commitment to preparing graduates for success in the workforce.

As the Career Office grows, it plans to expand its services, offering even more resources to support students in their career journeys. Through these efforts, the office is playing an essential role in shaping the future of UPNG graduates and improving the job market in Papua New Guinea.
